About this tree
7,554 people from 97 European royal and noble houses, 2,542 marriages between them, from 700 to today: who they were, whom they married, what they ruled, and how any two of them were related.
Four ways to look
- Sphere
- Everyone at once. Distance from the centre is the year of birth; each house has its own direction and colour. Pick anyone to light up their family.
- Map
- Where they were born and died, and the lands their families held, decade by decade. Borders are approximate.
- Thrones
- Every throne as a row of reigns, coloured by house, so a crown passing from one family to another can be seen.
- Marriages
- Which houses married which, as a wheel, or one person's marriages on a time line.
Where the facts come from
- People, dates, places, titles and marriages: Wikidata (CC0).
- Portraits and coats of arms: Wikimedia Commons, each under its own licence.
- Summaries: Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).
- Historical borders: historical-basemaps (GPL-3.0); coastlines: Natural Earth.
Who is on it
Members of 97 houses, from the Carolingians to the Windsors, who are well enough known to have articles in several languages of Wikipedia, and the people they married. 1,050 of them held a throne or a title. 2,143 have a page of their own here.
What it gets wrong
Wikidata is written by volunteers. Some dates are missing, some reigns are not recorded, and a few people sit in the wrong house. The lists of rulers here are the ones on this tree, not complete lists. Corrections made on Wikidata reach this site the next time it is rebuilt.
