Crowned emperor on Christmas Day 800
Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne emperor in St Peter's in Rome on Christmas Day 800. Einhard, his biographer, claims Charlemagne would not have gone into the church had he known what the pope planned.

In 802 an Asian elephant named Abul-Abbas reached Aachen, a gift to Charlemagne from the caliph Harun al-Rashid. It died in 810, reportedly while on campaign with the army against the Danes.
