The emperor who opened Charlemagne's tomb
In the year 1000 Otto III, who wanted to be seen as Charlemagne's successor, visited Charlemagne's tomb at Aachen, took relics from it and carried them to Rome. The same year he tried to have Charlemagne made a saint.
