A minor knight's sons take southern Italy
Tancred of Hauteville was a minor Norman knight with twelve sons. Several went south as mercenaries; Robert Guiscard was made Duke of Apulia and Calabria by the pope in 1059, and with his younger brother Roger conquered Sicily.
