The king who thought he was made of glass
Charles VI of France had long bouts of psychosis. In his twenties he came to believe he was made of glass, wore clothes reinforced with iron rods and would not let his advisers near him in case he shattered.

Charles VI of France had long bouts of psychosis. In his twenties he came to believe he was made of glass, wore clothes reinforced with iron rods and would not let his advisers near him in case he shattered.
At a Paris masquerade on 28 January 1393, Charles VI and five nobles danced as wild men in linen costumes soaked in resin and sewn onto them. A torch set them alight. Four died; the king lived because the Duchess of Berry threw her skirt over him.
