Drowned on the way to the Holy Land
Frederick Barbarossa joined the Third Crusade, travelling overland, and drowned in 1190 trying to cross the Saleph river in Anatolia. Most of his army gave up before reaching Acre. German legend says he sleeps under the Kyffhäuser hills, waiting to return.
