In 1917, with Britain at war with Germany, George V changed the royal house's name from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor. Wilhelm II reportedly joked that he was off to see The Merry Wives of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
George V's physician, Lord Dawson, gave the dying king lethal injections of morphine and cocaine on 20 January 1936. Dawson's notes, published in 1986, show he wanted the death announced first in The Times rather than in the evening papers.
