Three days in the snow at Canossa
Excommunicated by Pope Gregory VII, Henry IV crossed the Alps in winter and waited at the gate of Canossa Castle in January 1077 in a hair-shirt, allegedly barefoot, for three days, until the pope lifted the ban.
