A European court in Rio de Janeiro

Fleeing Napoleon's invasion in November 1807, the Portuguese royal family and court, nearly 10,000 people, sailed for Brazil. Rio de Janeiro served as the capital for thirteen years, and John VI did not return to Lisbon until 1821.
