Dürer's rhinoceros
In 1515 Manuel I received a live Indian rhinoceros in Lisbon, the first seen in Europe since Roman times. He sent it on to the pope, but the ship sank off Italy. Dürer, who never saw it, drew it from a sketch and a letter.
