The king who never came back
Sebastian of Portugal invaded Morocco in 1578 and was last seen riding headlong into the enemy lines at Alcácer Quibir. Whether his body was found is uncertain; Portugal passed to Philip II of Spain, and Sebastianism, the belief that he would return, lasted for centuries.
