The Byzantine bride of Moscow
Sophia Palaiologina, niece of the last Byzantine emperor, married Ivan III of Moscow in 1472. She is believed to have brought Byzantine court ceremony to the Kremlin, and Moscow came to see itself as the Third Rome.
