Marie Antoinette

1755–1793 · Habsburg-Lorraine

Last Queen of France prior to the French Revolution. Born at Hofburg Palace. Died at place de la Concorde.

Marie Antoinette

She never said 'let them eat cake'

The line 'let them eat cake' comes from Rousseau's Confessions, written in 1765, about an unnamed great princess. Marie Antoinette was nine and living in Vienna at the time, and nobody pinned the phrase on her until decades after her death.
